The increasing interest in e-commerce and online payments in Turkey continues to be reflected in the figures. New solutions developed by financial technology companies and banks, increasing diversity in e-commerce and digital services lead to an increase in online payments.
According to the November card payment statistics announced by the Interbank Card Center (BKM), card payments increased by 66% compared to November last year, while online card payments increased by 90%. Among the total card payments of 109.1 billion lira in November 2020, the amount of online card payments was 29.2 billion lira. In other words, while online card payments constituted 26% of total card payments in November 2020, this rate was 29% in November 2021.
It is seen that the increases experienced in 2020 with the support of online commerce and digitalization due to the pandemic effect continue in 2021. The ratio of online card payments to total payments was below 20% in the past years. If we compare on the basis of the same periods; 29% in November 2021; This rate, which was 26% in November 2020, is 20% in November 2019. This rate was at 16% at the end of 2018.
1/3 of the amount spent is online
In addition, online payments, which were 68.4 billion lira in 2016 and 99 billion lira in 2017, were 139 billion lira in 2018. In other words, the amount of card payments made in the 12 months of 2016 is now made in almost 1 month.
Discounts applied by stores and e-commerce sites on different days, especially in November, play an important role in online payments. As a result of the campaigns and discounts that grow every year, by November 2021, 1 TL of every 3 TL card payment is made via internet and mobile channels.
