The COVID-19 process, which has affected the whole world, has brought to the fore the importance of the concept of health from many different perspectives. It was clearly engraved in memories that health should always be a priority for the country’s economy.
Health cannot be ignored in order for country economies and therefore the global economy to grow; It was once again understood by everyone that otherwise they would face very serious problems.
The data supporting these facts were announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The health expenditure report, which is announced regularly by TÜİK every year, shows that there has been a clear increase in health expenditures in recent years, with increasing investments and the development of social awareness.
The increase in health expenditures broke a record with 24% in 2020
In 2020, which experienced the highest increase rate in recent years, health expenditures increased by 24.3% compared to the previous year and reached the limit of 250 billion lira. The increase in the rate of increase in health expenditures in recent years is also evident in the data of the last 5 years. Health expenditures, which amounted to 201 billion lira in 2019, increased by 21.7% compared to 2018. Increase rates were 17.5% in 2018; 17.4% in 2017; It was 14.5% in 2016 and 10.5% in 2015. Annual health expenditures, which exceeded 100 billion liras for the first time in Turkey in 2015, have increased 2.5 times in 5 years.

Health investments increased by 32%
Approximately 198 billion lira of the 250 billion lira health expenditures in 2020 will be made by the state; 52 billion lira was made by the private sector. While the majority of health expenditures made by the private sector (40 billion liras) were recorded as household expenditures, the share of insurance companies was 6.5 billion liras.
In Turkey, investments within the scope of health expenditures increased by a significant 32% in 2020, reaching 16 billion 870 million TL. The increase rate in health investments in 2019 was 30.5%.
Health expenditure per capita reached 3 thousand lira
The amount of health expenditure per capita was 23.1% and reached 2 thousand 997 lira, the highest level of all time. This rate was announced as a 20% increase in the previous year.
