The rate of use of credit cards in online transactions in Turkey continues to increase every month. According to the data monitored monthly by the Interbank Card Center and shared with the public, there are clear increases in transaction amounts and transaction numbers on an annual basis.
The domestic usage amount of local and foreign credit cards, which was 190 billion lira in 2019, reached 260 billion lira in 2020. While the 2020 performance fell behind the transaction amount in the first 8 months of 2021, this amount has reached 403 billion lira as of the first 11 months of 2021.
A similar situation also applies to transaction numbers. While the number of transactions carried out by domestic and foreign cards in domestic use in 2020 was approximately 850 billion, this number exceeded 1.2 trillion in the first 11 months of 2021.
So, what is the sectoral distribution of these increases in transaction numbers and transaction amounts?
Again, according to the November data, which is the latest report announced by the Interbank Cards Center, the number of transactions carried out with the domestic use of domestic and foreign cards was 144.8 billion. The amount of expenditure made with this number of transactions is 55.4 billion lira.
The sector with the highest number of transactions made online was the electricity, electronic goods and computer sector with 29.9 million. While the markets and shopping malls sector followed this sector with 26.3 million units, the service sector ranked third with approximately 15 million units.
When transaction amounts in online credit card usage are taken into account, the electricity, electronic goods and computer sector is at the top of the sectoral distribution with 12.1 billion lira, in parallel with the transaction numbers. Public and tax payments rank second with 7.5 billion liras, and the market and shopping malls sector ranks third with 5.8 billion liras. Other sectors in terms of transaction volume are listed as follows;
Service sectors: 4.5 billion lira
Airlines: 3.5 billion lira
Building Materials, hardware, hardware: 3.3 billion lira
Clothing and accessories: 3 billion lira
Vehicle rental, sales, service: 2.7 billion lira
Contractor jobs top in pay per transaction
In terms of payment amounts per transaction in online shopping, the contractor sector is by far at the top with 8 thousand 322 liras. This sector is followed by the building materials, hardware and hardware sector with 4 thousand 640 liras per transaction. The accommodation sector comes in third place in terms of expenditure per transaction with 4 thousand 541 liras.

Gasoline and fuel stations: 2 thousand 426 lira
Airlines: One thousand 762 lira
Car rental, sales, service: One thousand 622 lira
Furniture and decoration: One thousand 481 lira
